Captain James Cook was an 18th century explorer and navigator whose achievements in mapping the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography. As one of the very few men in the 18th century navy to rise through the ranks, Cook was particularly sympathetic to the needs of ordinary sailors.
Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the and.
